Heartbreaking news for all those who expected to get a very specific gun emoji as the emoji will not make its way to the standardized new emoji list that was set for 2016. The rifle emoji was all set to hit in the Unicode 9.0 release but few companies including Apple raise their voice against the inclusion of this emoji which finally led to the removal of it from the list.
Apple Indicated They Will Not Support The Rifle Emoji
The incident started in 2015 during the quarterly Unicode gathering that calls representatives from big named companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft in order to oversee the removal and addition of emojis in the upcoming new standardized emoji list. Apple indicated then only that they will not support the rifle emoji in any of their iOS devices. Microsoft too opposed the inclusion of rifle emoji and finally a unanimous decision was made to drop this emoji.
However, a handgun emoji is already included which in turn reduce the need for adding one more same emoji whereas those were looking for some more specific gun emoji might be disheartened. The existing handgun emoji was added as a part of the Olympic themed emojis that also includes other Olympic based emojis such as medal emoji.
Also, it is always good not to encode a special emoji that will not be accessed and supported by the mass people. As these are the expensive emojis to implement while they require more storage cost in mobile. So, obviously, it makes sense to ensure first the significant support for a special emoji before encoding it in the new list. There are some emojis in the list that have experienced very small usage but still they require resources for supporting. This type of emoji faces huge pressure for implementing but also require more of public scrutiny to be ultimately fruitful.
