Kaspersky’s Free Decryption Tool For CoinVault Victims

If you’ve seen the screen above, chances are possibly you or somebody you know has been a victim of ransomware. Fortunately, Kaspersky Lab, creators of Kaspersky security software, has discovered a potential solution.

If you have never seen the screen above, consider yourself lucky. “CoinVault” is like “CryptoLocker” in that it takes your data and holds it “prisoner” by encrypting the information. The application demands  payment in order for the files to be decrypted and the ransom increases the longer you take to comply. Naturally, most would be skeptical of this sort of ploy, however CoinVault is unique in that it will allow you to decrypt one file free.

Luckily, Kaspersky Lab in conjunction with the Netherlands police has found a solution by way for decryption keys that were recently obtained. Using the recovered decryption keys, Kaspersky has built an tool that can decrypt the hostage data. This will work for data that has been encrypted using the recovered keys.

While this is far from a complete solution, it is one step closer and will undoubtedly become an effective tool when and if the remaining keys are found. The Kaspersky “Ransomware Decryptor” is accessible in the source link below.
