Google Assistant has now started to play advertisements in Google Home. Recently a number of users complained that they heard an ad of the hyped action remake of Beauty and the Beast.
Google Home is a smart voice-activated speaker that responds to the user’s queries through Google Assistant. It can be a quite useful product to keep at homes but the recent revelation might not be appreciated.
No one wants to hear unasked advertisements without warning, and that is exactly what Google home is doing. The ad is delivered by the same voice as Google Assistant and seamlessly adds it to the other information but users are still not pleased with it. The ads are apparently not even related to their searches.
Many users complained that they had not searched for upcoming movies or any information about the Beauty and the Beast and still got unwanted information about it. A user even recorded and shared a video. In it, he asked “OK Google, what’s my day like?” and Google Assistant followed the configured “My day” by proceeding with the details of weather, date, reminders and news. But there was an addition; Google Assistant said,
By the way, Disney’s live action Beauty and The Beast opens today. In this version of the story, Belle is the inventor instead of Maurice. That rings truer if you ask me. For some more movie fun, ask me something about Belle.
After no response, Home simply said “Have a good one” and moved on to narrate the day’s news.
It still isn’t clear why Google Home will make a clearly undesirable addition like that. The device costs $129 and it will be quite a shock if the owners are not allowed to opt out advertisements like that. Although Google could generate a lot of profit through such advertisements but certainly it would not be easily acceptable to their audience.
