Facebook today announced a platform for developers to create new experiences into its in-app cameras. Facebook will get the most benefit out of it but it is a great opportunity for developers. Mark Zuckerberg said that the upcoming platform would be AR. Developers could try out pictures, video filters to bring something new to the app.

As a manifestation, Zuckerberg illustrated various stunning camera effects. According to him, now along with the Facebook stories a whole new feature will be introduced. This will allow people to add three-dimensional text and pictures which are far beyond any face filter used today. In a demo, huge words saying “it is feeding time” ascended the breakfast table, where many sharks swan around the cereal bowl.

A two-dimensional photo was turned into a 3D picture in another demo. A routine picture of an office was also shown in which chairs were transformed in many ways. Zuckerberg said that with just six platforms, the camera platform will be launched. The face filters and 3D effects into camera apps were initiated by Snapchat. Snapchat also launched a new feature world lenses, which can project similar 3D images.

In this feature, objects will be identified and processed in order to suggest filters. Some of the effects would be helpful, while others would be for fun purposes.

Considering Facebook’s rapid growth, Zuckerberg accepted that Facebook has started working late on Augmented Reality. But he also added that the camera app’s object recognition and machine learning technology will give them a great advantage.

Even though we were a little slow to add cameras to all our apps, I’m confident that now we’re going to push this augmented reality camera forward

He said. After introducing stories, AR camera is certainly going to attract a lot of attention. If the features are a hit, we’ll witness new domain of Augmented Reality in social media platforms.
