To celebrate one year of the Vive, HTC will offer $100 off on April 5th, 2017. The Vive is a Virtual Reality (VR) system developed by HTC that was launched on April 5th, 2016. In addition to the $100 offer, HTC is rolling out its first subscription game service, the Viveport Subscription. The Viveport subscription is a service similar to Steam storefront by Valve. Till now a lot of users have been using the Steam storefront as the main source for games and apps on the HTC Vive.
However, HTC is trying to change this with the new Viveport Subscription, which will go directly up against the Steam storefront. With this subscription, subscribers can choose five games or apps from the library. The library is said to hold 50 apps by now. The apps will have a one month trial period for which users will have to sign up for after the service is launched.
This can be a very good deal for a lot of users, as most VR games and apps cost between $10 and $50. Prior to this announcement, HTC had a launched a Vive Tracker, which cost $99. The Tracker is a small disc-shaped device that can track almost any object, from toys to pets. This shows that HTC is growing independent from the co-creators of the Vive VR system, Valve.
This does come as a result of Valve working with other tech companies to develop VR headsets similar to the HTC Vive. These include a headset for LG which would be compatible with Steam VR. The new offer can be availed on Wednesday 5th April 2017. As per the offer, the new customer could purchase the Vive headset for $699.
This will also include the free downloadable copy of HTC’s own game “Arcade Saga”. The Viveport service will follow and it will be priced at $6.99 per month.
